ORIENTATION EVENT WELCOMES NEW STUDENTS TO THE PETROLEUM ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN

100 Level Students, Petroleum Engineering

The Department of Petroleum Engineering, known within the Faculty of Technology as the Society of Petroleum Engineers, University of Ibadan (SPEUI), held an orientation program for its new students. The event aimed to provide freshmen with an overview of their upcoming university experience.

The program began with hosts Laura Onyetube, a 200-level student, and Omileke Opeyemi, a 300-level student, introducing themselves and inviting a 100-level student to start the event with a prayer.

Dr. Sarah Akintola, the Head of the Department, delivered a welcoming speech, advising the new students to stay focused on their academic goals. Dr. Akinshete, the Course Advisor, and Dr. Orisamika, the Undergraduate Coordinator, also spoke, offering insights into academic requirements and explaining how the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is calculated.

A panel discussion followed, featuring upper-level students who shared their experiences balancing academics and extracurricular activities. The panelists included Olasunkanmi Mubarak (400 level), Olatigbe Yesiri (300 level), Balogun Abdul Mumeen (500 level), Abdul Wasiu Ubaydah (500 level), and Erazua Delight (200 level). One of the panellists emphasized the session’s purpose, stating :

“The panel session was meant to encourage the freshers by showing them that their goals are achievable. We shared our stories to guide them on navigating university life successfully.”

The orientation also introduced freshmen to various campus organizations that support learning and professional development, such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Technology Christian Student Family (TCSF), Technology and Engineering Students Association Press (TESA PRESS), and the TRC members of TESA.

Overall, the event aimed to integrate new students into the department’s community, highlight available resources, and inspire them to pursue academic excellence at the University of Ibadan.
